Silk-screen printing

What is screen printing?

Screen printing is a printing process in which ink is applied to the paper through a fine screen. A stencil is used to exclude certain areas of the screen so that the ink is only transferred to the paper through the free meshes. The print motif is created.

How does screen printing work?

First, a frame is covered with a fine-mesh net. A thin layer of photo emulsion is then applied. The motif to be printed is exposed with a positive of the print image. The emulsion hardens in the uncovered areas and the unexposed areas (print image) remain water-soluble and are washed out at the end of the exposure. These areas then allow the ink to pass through. The finished screen is then placed on the paper and the ink is applied. Using a squeegee, the ink is pressed through the free areas of the screen onto the paper. The paint must then dry.

Features of screen printing

Intense color brilliance and high opacity: Screen printing offers excellent opacity and can apply very thick layers of ink, making it particularly suitable for vibrant colors and special effects (e.g. fluorescent colors, metallic effects). The colors also look intense on dark backgrounds.

High-quality printing: Screen printing is ideal for printing bold, intense colors and special effects.

Which paper for screen printing?

Screen printing is an intensive all-rounder. Screen printing adheres to almost all materials.

The contrast between haptic paper surfaces such as Gmund Mother Earth or metallic papers such as Gmund Gold and the matt, flat printing ink is particularly beautiful.

What should I bear in mind when processing Gmund papers?

– The paper surface may vary slightly depending on the production process.
– Natural papers have a top and bottom side. It is recommended to use the top side of the paper as the front side for the printed object.
– When printing and processing, the recommendations of the manufacturers of machines, printing inks, adhesives, laminating and embossing foils etc. must be observed. Gmund cannot accept any liability for damage caused by incorrect application.
