Offset printing

What is offset printing?

Offset printing – this is a so-called flat printing process. Why flat printing? Briefly explained: the areas to be printed and those not to be printed are on one level, on a flat printing plate. This creates an accurate and precise transfer of text and images onto the paper.

How does offset work?

Offset printing works on the principle that oil and water repel each other. There are both printing and non-printing areas on a printing plate. The printing areas are grease-friendly (hydrophobic) and the non-printing areas are water-friendly (hydrophilic). The printing plate is moistened with water and only adheres to the non-printing areas. The ink is then applied. This only adheres to the areas that are hydrophobic. The ink is not transferred directly onto the paper, but onto a rubber blanket cylinder. Only then is the motif printed onto the paper from this blanket. This intermediate step ensures that the ink is evenly distributed, which has a positive effect on the print quality.

In offset printing, a distinction is made between two processes: classic and UV offset. The difference lies mainly in the choice of inks (conventional offset inks / UV-curing inks) and the drying methods (by oxidation-absorption / immediately by UV light).

Characteristics of offset printing

High-resolution printing: Offset printing enables high print quality and fine details.

Cost efficiency for large print runs: Offset printing is particularly economical when large quantities are to be produced, as the cost per piece decreases as the print run increases. For small print runs, offset is often less profitable than other processes such as digital printing due to the set-up costs.

Which Gmund paper for offset?

Offset is the most colorful and cost-effective printing process. White papers are the first choice for large print runs and for the reproduction of photos and text. Depending on the motif and mood, Gmund offers different shades of white from bluish bright white to classic chamois. The Lakepaper Blocker collection is very opaque.
